“This space doesn’t feel right.”
Bring temperature, air quality, occupancy and energy together before suggesting a change.
João Pedro Back to portfolio Places are already complex systems.
01 / Premise
Buildings contain increasingly capable systems, yet understanding and controlling them still means navigating a collection of disconnected products, interfaces and specialists.
This independent project explores a shared operating layer for the places we inhabit: one that can translate environmental conditions, infrastructure and operational complexity into an experience that feels calm, legible and accountable—while keeping ownership, privacy and meaningful control with the people and organisations responsible for the place.
02 / The opportunity
The building behaves as a whole, but its systems are presented in fragments. Complexity that belongs behind the scenes is passed on to the people who live, work and care for it.
03 / A living system
Instead of exposing every device, the experience brings together signals, context and consequences. Select a state to see how the place explains itself.
Everything is working together
The system is learning the group’s shared comfort patterns from collective adjustments while keeping individual preferences private. Temperature, air and energy are balanced; no action is needed.
04 / Product principles
The project is guided by a point of view about how intelligence should behave when it becomes part of the places around us.
Work quietly in the background, interrupt only when attention is useful, and route issues to the stakeholder able to resolve them.
Translate technical readings into conditions, consequences and clear choices.
Give occupants, operators and specialists the right view of the same shared system.
Make every automated response understandable, reversible and proportionate.
Adapt as people, equipment, spaces and patterns of use evolve over time.
05 / The ecosystem
The opportunity is larger than controlling devices. A useful product must connect people, spaces, infrastructure and services while preserving the different responsibilities around them.
06 / Defining journeys
The experience becomes meaningful when it connects what the place senses with what a person needs to understand or decide.
Bring temperature, air quality, occupancy and energy together before suggesting a change.
Coordinate access, lighting, climate and security as one comprehensible action.
Turn an unusual pattern into a diagnosis, gather the relevant context and delegate it to the stakeholder able to act.
07 / Product architecture
A simple product structure creates progressive disclosure: what matters now comes first; spaces, routines, performance and care remain close when more understanding is needed.
One structure, with the level of detail and authority adapted to each role.
08 / In development
The current work is defining the right questions, modelling the relationships and prototyping the moments where technical complexity must become human understanding.
Questions guiding the work
09 / Reflection
This project brings together an architect’s understanding of places as interdependent systems with a product designer’s responsibility to make complexity usable.
It is an ongoing exploration of how the environments around us might become more legible, responsive and humane—and of what it takes to design not only the interface, but the relationships behind it.
